The St. Jago High

 French CSEC Retreat

​

On March 27th 2018, 9 students of the St. Jago High School along with their teacher Ms. Chrisan Blake went on a venture at the Mayfair Hotel in Kingston. This day marked the first day of a three day French retreat held for CSEC students.  The students were very excited and could not wait for the experience they have spent many days talking about with their parents, teachers and friends.

 

Of a fact, there were those overwhelmed by the idea of going to the swimming pool while others were simply glad for the getaway. Away from the stress of school and SBA’s etc. Yet, many met their disappointment when they received their programs upon arrival at the hotel. After scanning the document several times, they finally accepted the fact that they would not be allowed to go to the pool on the Wednesday as this was a strict day of French practice. Nevertheless, students warmed up and got used to the idea of practising French for the entire retreat.

Mrs. Mylène Ferriera, president of the Jamaica Association for French Teachers (JAFT) arrived on site on the Tuesday evening. By this time students had eaten dinner and were prepared to have a “getting to know you” session with her.

      I would like to thank Mrs. Ferriera for making herself available to share with the St. Jago CSEC French group. You have been so warm and fun and most importantly full of insight and wisdom. Not only are you an excellent facilitator, you are indeed a master teacher, one who has the student’s interest at heart. To the St. Jago High School Family; including our principal Mrs. Collette Feurtado-Pryce who has offered major support and provided transportation for the students we say thank you. To the parents and family members of these students who were willing to invest in this venture. A big commendation goes out to them as they bought into the vision of complete immersion and we are indeed grateful for their support.  Most importantly, I must extend a big thank you to the great mind behind the venture, Dr. Patricia Hutchinson. She conceptualised the idea of a retreat to facilitate an environment of immersion close to the time of the CSEC oral examination. To all the supporters, well-wishers, participators thank you for making this year’s French CSEC Retreat count.
